Accounting 101

Course Description: Accounting enhances financial literacy enabling students to develop the knowledge and skills to manage financial affairs of individuals, community organisations and sole proprietors. Students will gain tools that allow them to make real life financial decisions and prepare and communicate financial information to a wide range of users. Related careers: Accounting Technician, Accounts Clerk, Financial Controller. Transferable skills: Ability to follow a process in detail, check accuracy and prepare statements for individuals.

Course Description: At this level, Accounting builds on investigating systems and using the online software Xero to process data. It continues to focus more closely on analysing, interpreting and communicating financial information to a wide range of users, this includes the investigation of both inventory and accounts receivable subsystems. Related career: Accounting Technician, Accounts Clerk and Accounts Manager. Transferable skills: Ability to follow and understand a process and up an analysis of findings.

Course Description: Accounting Level 3 builds on the concepts of Partnership’s financial records and interpreting an annual report. Students will analyse a company’s financial records and communicate their findings. It is an in-depth process and requires students to complete their own research. The course is strongly recommended if students intend to pursue a Commerce qualification at tertiary level. Course Description: Business Studies creatively explores how small business enterprise works. Course Description: Students will develop practical solutions in our new, fully equipped wood workshops by making a range of products both for the building industry and the cabinet/furniture making industry. Design Visual Communication 101

Course Description: Students will develop design solutions to given briefs by working through the design process. Students work on projects all year leading to Internal and External assessment of the portfolio of work at the end of the year (No exams). Design Visual Communication with Product Design

Course Description: This course combines DVC and Product/Mixed Materials Design at Level 3. Students will work through the design process to create and present solutions. Students will develop sophisticated design, visual communication, presentation and critical analysis skills. This course establishes students as independent designers, creating their own individualised project from a range of contexts from the design areas of architecture/landscape architecture and/or product/fashion design. Students work on projects all year leading to selected internal and external assessments with a portfolio of work at the end of the year. (No exams). Course Description: Students will develop practical solutions in the workshop by making a range of projects. They learn new skills using tools and equipment, observing and performing engineering processes and investigating work methods. There are theory task sheets that must be completed as part of this course. Related careers: Any Mechanical Engineering trade, Automotive Engineering. Food & Nutrition Technology 101

Course Description: Through the processes of selecting, preparing, cooking, and serving food, students enhance their creativity and develop skills that contribute to well being. Supported by practical food safety students will have the opportunity to investigate healthy eating and cultural foods in our communities along with building the knowledge and skills to interpret food packaging. Course Description: This is a practical, Hospitality industry focused course with standards recognised by Service IQ. Commercial equipment is used to prepare café quality dishes and you will have the opportunity to gain credits in the application of barista skills, though managing the Hot Shotz café. Mixed Materials Technology

Course Description: Previously Product/Fashion Design. This course consolidates knowledge of the design process by establishing skills in design and manufacture with a focus on producing a modelled outcome from a range of mixed materials including but not limited to, wood, fabric, plastic and/or metal. To complete this course, students will cover visual communication, practical knowledge and application and the development of construction skills. Photography Design 101

Course Description: This course explores the knowledge and skills needed for both Photography and Design. Students will experiment with a range of materials (wet, dry and digital media) to produce a series of artworks based around a theme. This is a course which emphasises digital art making, so is mainly based on the computers. Course Description: Art Design is a computer based course where students learn the skill set needed to visually communicate ideas that inspire, inform or engage others. Based on real world outcomes students will be learning practical and digital skills while researching an individually chosen theme. Students will practice the elements of art design and illustration, as well as investigate the influence of contemporary artists, to generate a series of design works to create a portfolio as a final submission. For the year students will have full access to an Adobe license, including Photoshop. Course Description: An in-depth practical course in Sculpture. Each student’s course is tailored to their individual interests and strengths. Automotive Engineering Academy

Course Description: This course allows students to make a start on pre-trade training in Automotive Engineering. They spend one day a week at Unitec for one semester. Also, students spend from 2:00 pm6:00 pm on a Tuesday here at school in the automotive workshop. In the second semester students spend one day a week in an automotive work experience placement. Students will complete Level 2 Automotive Industry Standards. These Standards and the experience gained will prepare students well for apprenticeships or for pre apprenticeship training at tertiary level. The students will be working towards a National Certificate in Automotive. Building Academy

Course Description: This Academy allows students to make a start on pre trade training in building and construction. Students go off site one day a week to Unitec to work in the building workshop there on real life building projects. Students stay onsite one day a week 2pm- 6pm on a Tuesday to work in the Building workshop here at school on real life projects. Year 12 - In school timetabled Building class and Unitec one day a week Year 13- Onsite Tuesday afternoons and Unitec one day a week Students will complete Level 2 Building, Construction and Allied Trades Industry Standards ( BCATS) These Standards and the experience gained will prepare students well for apprenticeships or for pre apprenticeship training at tertiary level. Health Academy

Course Description: This is an Academy that operates at Waitakere College allowing students to make a start on a Health related career. Students go off site one day a week to Unitec to participate in courses related to Health Students stay on site for in school timetabled Health class. Students will complete L2 and L3 units in Psychology and human behaviour, Health and Well -Being, Human Biology, Early Childhood Education and other health industry related credits. Hospitality Academy

Course Description: This is a 1 year Academy that operates at Waitakere College allowing students to make a start on entry into the Hospitality Industry. Students go off site one day a week to work in a commercial tertiary kitchen. Students stay on site one day a week 2pm -6pm on Tuesdays to work in the Hospitality room here at school. Related careers: Hospitality front of house, barista, chef, customer service. Transferable skills: Time management, customer service, personal presentation, team work.

Mechatronics

Course Description: This is a 1 year Academy that operates through a Tertiary Institution. A few places only are available in this specialist course. The program allows students to attain Level 2 standards while working on computer programming and electronics. They will also gain credits towards L2 standards in Manufacturing and Technology Vocational Pathway. Related careers: Electronics, plastics, production engineer or technician, programmer, computer science, aircraft technician.

Customer Service 203

Course Description: A structured work experience programme where selected students go off site one-day-per-week for an agreed number of weeks to a Customer Service based workplace.. Students complete practical and theory work as part of their individual learning plan focussed around developing Customer Service skills. Topics include workplace health and safety, driving, first aid, future planning, curriculum vitae, and interviewing. HOMESTAY

Waitakere College partners with professional homestay providers, offering a wide range of families so that we can find the best match for you – large or small families, with or without pets, with many different hobbies and interests. All are close to school and keen to show you real kiwi lifestyles and a warm welcome.

Homestay families provide meals, internet and study area, in a comfortable, safe and caring environment. They are visited and police checked before students are placed in the home. Alternatively, should a student wish to live with family friends or relatives, this is referred to as a Designated Caregiver. All Designated Caregivers must be approved by the College and are police checked as part of this process, then visited at least once a year and are expected to attend Teacher/Parent interviews and provide transport for their student to school events.
