Abbotsford School District

Located in the heart of the Fraser Valley, the Abbotsford School District has 46 schools that are attended by over 19,200 full and part-time students at 30 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, 1 combined middle-secondary school, and 7 secondary schools. As the largest employer in the city, we employ over 2,200 full and part-time teaching and support staff who are committed to helping students succeed. We offer a variety of quality programs to meet unique learning needs and we engage students in stimulating and relevant educational experiences.

The Abbotsford School District honours the traditional territory of the Sumas First Nation and Matsqui First Nation on which our schools are located. It is with respectful consideration that the programs and services we provide to students and families are sensitive to the cultural protocols of these two communities.

Following the BC Ministry of Education Curriculum, the BC Early Learning Framework and current research by experts in the Early Childhood Education field, our primary classrooms focus on play-based, emotionally supportive, academically stimulating, language enriched dynamic programming.
French Immersion
French Immersion French Immersion is a District Program in Abbotsford that works towards functional fluency in French for a growing number of students each year. Over 1,300 students and 65 fully qualified bilingual teachers are active in French Immersion program across the District. Early French Immersion begins in Kindergarten at one of four different elementary schools located across the city: Centennial Park, Clearbrook, Margaret Stenersen, and Sandy Hill. A second option and entry point for the French Immersion program begins in grade 6 at Chief Dan George Middle School. This is a highly-intensive ‘Late’ French Immersion program, taking place in grades 6 and 7. By grade 8, both the Late French Immersion students and those who have been in French Immersion since Kindergarten (Early French Immersion) join together for their grade 8 years. Students in grades 9-12 go on to complete their immersion experience at W.J. Mouat, graduating with a ‘Double Dogwood’ bilingual certificate. Throughout their school experience, students are ‘immersed’ in the French language, gaining fluency, while completing the learning outcomes described in the curriculum for all secondary school graduates across the province.
